The Lord’s Supper and Days of Unleavened Bread On Friday night, April 18th, the Intercontinental Church of God will commemorate the Lord’s Supper. This service, known traditionally as the Passover service, will be held at The Comfort Inn at 4833 Hixson Pike in Chattanooga, TN, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
On this night, of which Paul called “the night in which he (Jesus Christ) was betrayed” (1 Corinthians 11:23), our Savior introduced the elements and the symbols of the New Testament. Jesus Christ took of bread (unleavened, flat bread – picturing the pure, sinless body of our Savior) and of the cup of the fruit of the vine (representing His blood of the New Testament, His perfect sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins) and through these two elements introduced the New Covenant between God and man.
Jesus Himself explains the purpose of the foot washing ceremony, as being to show true humility and the proper sense of service (John. 13:12-17). No one can be greater than His Lord, who is Jesus Christ; yet Jesus was the greatest servant of all and gave more than anyone else for mankind. This spirit of Christian love and service is expressed symbolically by washing another person's feet and then allowing that person to reciprocate.
Thus, “The Lord’s Supper” represents Christ's sacrifice for all— both the individual and the world—and pictures the initial step in salvation. Only through acceptance of this sacrifice can one repent and be forgiven. Repentance is the first stave in individual conversion.
The First Day of Unleavened Bread occurs some 24 hours after the observance of the Lord’s Supper (the 15th day of the first month). Six days later the second annual Holy Day; the Last Day of Unleavened Bread (the 21st day of the first month) occurs. Much wisdom and spiritual insight can be gained through understanding the meaning of these days. By keeping these days in Holy convocation will avail God’s people the opportunity to read from the Bible and hear the very Word of God expounded, allowing us to comprehend greater truths relating to God’s plan of salvation and His Love for His creation.
