Described:
Deuteronomy 13:13
Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among
you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city,
saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not
known;
Hebrews 3:12 Take heed,
brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of
unbelief, in departing from the living God.
Caused by persecution:
Matthew 24:9-10 Then
shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill
you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's
sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one
another, and shall hate one another.
Luke 8:13 They on the
rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with
joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and
in time of temptation fall away.
Caused by Worldliness:
2Timothy 4:10 For Demas
hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is
departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto
Dalmatia.
Guilt & Punishment of:
Zephaniah 1:4-6 I will
also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the
inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of
Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the
priests; And them that worship the host of heaven upon the
housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD,
and that swear by Malcham; And them that are turned back
from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor
enquired for him.
Hebrews 10:25-31, 39 Not
forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the
manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much
the more, as ye see the day approaching. For if we sin
wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the
truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a
certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery
indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that
despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three
witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall
he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of
God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith
he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite
unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said,
Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the
Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a
fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. But
we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them
that believe to the saving of the soul.
Cautions against:
Hebrews 3:12 Take heed,
brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of
unbelief, in departing from the living God.
2Peter 3:17 Ye
therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before,
beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the
wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
Shall abound in the latter
days:
Matthew 24:12 And
because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax
cold.
2Thessalonians 2:3 Let
no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not
come, except there come a falling away first, and that man
of sin be revealed, the son of perdition.
1Timothy 4:1-3 Now the
Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some
shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing
spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in
hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats,
which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of
them which believe and know the truth.
General Scriptures:
Deuteronomy 32:15 But
Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art
grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook
God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his
salvation.
1Chronicles 28:9 And
thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and
serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for
the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the
imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be
found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee
off for ever.
Matthew 13:20-21 But he
that received the seed into stony places, the same is he
that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet
hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for
when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word,
by and by he is offended.
Matthew 24:10 And then
shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and
shall hate one another.
