From the Scriptures:
Should all things in the church be done for the edifying
of the congregation? What is God the author of regarding the
church? What is He not the author of? How are things to be
done in the church?
1 Corinthians 14:26, 33, 40
26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every
one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue,
hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be
done unto edifying.
33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as
in all churches of the saints.
40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
What is the responsibility of the members regarding
ministers?
Hebrews 13:17 Obey them
that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they
watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that
they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is
unprofitable for you.

Ministers
Does the Old Testament give us a principle about what we
are to do when a controversy arises in the congregation?
Deuteronomy 17:8-13
08 If there arise a matter too hard for thee in judgment,
between blood and blood, between plea and plea, and between
stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within thy
gates: then shalt thou arise, and get thee up into the place
which the LORD thy God shall choose;
09 And thou shalt come unto the priests the Levites, and
unto the judge that shall be in those days, and enquire; and
they shall shew thee the sentence of judgment:
10 And thou shalt do according to the sentence, which they
of that place which the LORD shall choose shall shew thee;
and thou shalt observe to do according to all that they
inform thee:
11 According to the sentence of the law which they shall
teach thee, and according to the judgment which they shall
tell thee, thou shalt do: thou shalt not decline from the
sentence which they shall shew thee, to the right hand, nor
to the left.
12 And the man that will do presumptuously, and will not
hearken unto the priest that standeth to minister there
before the LORD thy God, or unto the judge, even that man
shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.
13 And all the people shall hear, and fear, and do no more
presumptuously.
Did Jesus give the keys of the kingdom of heaven to the
church?
Matthew 16:19 And I will
give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and
whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in
heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be
loosed in heaven.
What does binding mean here?
See the commentary:
When Jesus gave this power to the apostles, he meant that
whatsoever they forbade in the church should have divine
authority; whatever they permitted, or commanded, should
also have divine authority - that is, should be bound or
loosed in heaven, or meet the approbation of God. They were
to be guided ...in the organization of the church:
1. by the teaching of Christ, and,
2. by the teaching of the Holy Spirit.
This does not refer to persons, but to things -
“whatsoever,” not whosoever. It refers to rites and
ceremonies in the church. Such of the Jewish customs as they
should forbid were to be forbidden, and such as they thought
proper to permit were to be allowed. Such rites as they
should appoint in the church were to have the force of
divine authority. Accordingly, they commanded the Gentile
converts to “abstain from pollutions of idols, and from
fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood” Acts
15:20; and, in general, they organized the church, and
directed what was to be observed and what was to be avoided.
The rules laid down by them in the Acts of the Apostles and
in the Epistles, in connection with the teachings of the
Saviour as recorded in the evangelists, constitute the only
law
binding on Christians in regard to the order of the church,
and the rites and ceremonies to be observed in it.

Should members be looking for aggrandizement [the
act of increasing the wealth or prestige or power or scope
of something; "the aggrandizement of the king"; "his
elevation ] in God's church?
Luke 9:46-48
46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them
should be greatest.
47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a
child, and set him by him,
48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in
my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me
receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you
all, the same shall be great.
Now go further into Luke to Luke 22 and beginning in verse
24
Luke 22:24-30
24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them
should be accounted the greatest.
25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise
lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon
them are called benefactors.
26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among
you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he
that doth serve.
27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he
that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among
you as he that serveth.
28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my
temptations.
29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath
appointed unto me;
30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and
sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Does the Bible say anything about the Church remiting the
sins of members? If so, what does the Bible mean regarding
such a statement?
John 20:20-24
20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands
and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw
the Lord.
21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my
Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith
unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them;
and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
Notice the commentary on verse 23:
John 20:23
Whose soever sins ye remit - It
is certain God alone can forgive sins; and it would not only
be blasphemous, but grossly absurd, to say that any creature
could remit the guilt of a transgression which had been
committed against the Creator. The apostles received from
the Lord the doctrine of reconciliation, and the doctrine of
condemnation. They who believed on the Son of God, in
consequence of their preaching, had their sins remitted; and
they who would not believe were declared to lie under
condemnation. ~Adam Clarke
Can the church choose members of the congregation and
ordain them into positions of service within the church?
Acts 1:15, 23-26
Act 1:15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of
the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were
about an hundred and twenty,)
Act 1:23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who
was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
Act 1:24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which
knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two
thou hast chosen,
Act 1:25 That he may take part of this ministry and
apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he
might go to his own place.
Act 1:26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell
upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
Now to Acts, chapter 6 and beginning in verse 2
Acts 6:2-6
2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto
them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the
word of God, and serve tables.
3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of
honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we
may appoint over this business.
4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to
the ministry of the word.
5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose
Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and
Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas,
and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:
6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had
prayed, they laid their hands on them.
Now to Acts 13
Acts 13:1-5
1 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain
prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was
called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had
been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost
said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I
have called them.
3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands
on them, they sent them away.
4 So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto
Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.
5 And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of
God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to
their minister.
One more in Acts 14:23:
Acts 14:23 And when they
had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed
with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they
believed.
Are churches to help other member churches who are in
distress?
Acts 11:22, 28-30
22 Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the
church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas,
that he should go as far as Antioch.
28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and
signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth
[famine-hunger] throughout all the world: which came to pass
in the days of Claudius Caesar.
29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability,
determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in
Judaea:
30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the
hands of Barnabas and Saul.
Can the elders of the church [meaning
Headquarters--Leader, Board, Ministry] issue
decrees to the church? Can they establish churches?
Acts 16:4-5
4 And as they went through the cities, they delivered them
the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles
and elders which were at Jerusalem.
5 And so were the churches established in the faith, and
increased in number daily.
Does God give a stern warning to the leadership and
ministry of the church regarding the flock?
Acts 20:28 Take heed
therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the
which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the
church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
Does God expect every firstfruit to walk according to his
or her calling?
1 Corinthians 7:17 But
as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath
called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all
churches.
Did Paul deliver ordinances unto the churches?
1 Corinthians 11:2 Now I
praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and
keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
Notice the commentary on the phrase,
"keep the ordinances, as I delivered
them to you."
The apostles had “delivered” to them certain doctrines, or
rules, respecting the good order and the government of the
church; and they had in general observed them, and were
disposed still to do it. For this disposition to regard his
authority, and to keep what he had enjoined, he commends
them. He proceeds to specify what would be proper in regard
to the particular subject on which they had made inquiry. ~
Barnes Notes
As a firstfruit, will you see differences of
administrations among the true churches of God. If so, what
are you to keep in mind?
1 Corinthians 12:5 And
there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
1 Corinthians 12:27-31
27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles,
secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles,
then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of
tongues.
29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are
all workers of miracles?
30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues?
do all interpret?
31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto
you a more excellent way.
Is it possible for two leaders in the church to hold
different positions on a given subject? Will this be worked
out in the church?
Galatians 2:11-12
11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to
the face, because he was to be blamed.
12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with
the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and
separated himself, fearing them which were of the
circumcision.
Are ministers really servants of the congregation?
Philippians 1:1 Paul and
Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints
in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and
deacons:
Are their qualifications to be a minister?
1 Timothy 3:1-13
01 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a
bishop, he desireth a good work.
02 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife,
vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality,
apt to teach;
03 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy
lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
04 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children
in subjection with all gravity;
05 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how
shall he take care of the church of God?)
06 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall
into the condemnation of the devil.
07 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are
without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the
devil.
08 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued,
not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
09 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the
office of a deacon, being found blameless.
11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober,
faithful in all things.
12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their
children and their own houses well.
13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well
purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in
the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Do those in ordained positions receive gifts-talents
regarding those positions? What is their responsibility
before God regarding those gifts and talents?
1 Timothy 4:14 Neglect
not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by
prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
Are members to call on the ministry when they are sick?
James 5:14-15
14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the
church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil
in the name of the Lord:
15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord
shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they
shall be forgiven him.
Is the Church/Ministry to feed the flock? Do they have
the oversight of the congregation regarding this? If so,
does scripture detail just how they are to do this?
1 Peter 5:1-2
1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an
elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a
partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the
oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for
filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
As firstfruits, will you sometimes see those in and
around the congregation who are in contention with ministry,
attacking them and seeking to get them out of their
positions?
3 John 1:9-10
09 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to
have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he
doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not
content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the
brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them
out of the church.
Are you to keep yourselves in the Love of God?
Jude 1:21 Keep
yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our
Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
Quotes:
“Church isn’t where you meet. Church isn’t a building.
Church is what you do. Church is who you are. Church is the
human outworking of the person of Jesus Christ. Let’s not go
to Church, let’s be the Church.”
“The perfect church service, would be one we were almost
unaware of. Our attention would have been on God.”
“Some go to church to see and be seen, Some go there to say
they have been, Some go there to sleep and nod, But few go
there to worship God”
“The churches must learn humility as well as teach it.”
“Doctrinal rightness and rightness of ecclesiastical
position are important, but only as a starting point to go
on into a living relationship - and not as ends in
themselves”
