Definition:
The dictionary definition of "doctrine" is: "Doctrine is a
codification of beliefs or 'a body of teachings' or
'instructions', taught principles or positions, as the body
of teachings in a branch of knowledge or belief system." Our
definition is much more comprehensive. Our doctrine, the
doctrine of the Church of God is the Bible. The church lives
by every word of God. The STP [Systematic
Theology Project], our statements of belief, all
our booklets, sermons and teachings are merely explanations
of our doctrine.
To understand how doctrine is one of the solutions, listen
to this from the fly leaf of the Bible published by the D.
L. Moody Institute:
The Bible…This book contains the mind of God, the state of
man, the way of life, the doom of sinners, the happiness of
believers. Read it to be wise. Believe it to be safe.
Practice it to be holy.
It gives light to direct you, food to support you and
comfort to cheer you.
It is the traveler’s map, the soldier’s sword, the
Christian’s chart.
It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the
feet. Read it slowly, frequently, prayerfully.
It involves the highest responsibility, rewards the greatest
labor, and condemns all who trifle with it.
Quotes:
"The doctrine that rectifies the conscience, purifies the
heart, and produces love to God and man, is necessarily
true, whether men can comprehend all its depths and
relations or not."
“It is an undoubted truth that every doctrine that comes
from God, leads to God; and that which doth not tend to
promote holiness is not of God”
"Christianity, with its doctrine of humility, of
forgiveness, of love, is incompatible with the state, with
its haughtiness, its violence, its punishment, its wars”
“You can judge the quality of their faith from the way they
behave. Discipline is an index to doctrine.”
“Christ's riches are unsearchable, and this doctrine of the
gospel is the field this treasure is hidden in”
General Scriptures:
2 Corinthians 2:17 For
we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of
sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in
Christ.
1 Corinthians 11:16-19
16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such
custom, neither the churches of God.
17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not,
that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.
18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I
hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe
it.
19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they
which are approved may be made manifest among you.
Same verses in basic English:
16 But if any man will not be ruled in this question, this
is not our way of doing things, and it is not done in the
churches of God.
17 But in giving you this order, there is one thing about
which I am not pleased: it is that when you come together it
is not for the better but for the worse.
18 For first of all, it has come to my ears that when you
come together in the church, there are divisions among you,
and I take the statement to be true in part.
19 For divisions are necessary among you, in order that
those who have God's approval may be clearly seen among you.
Ephesians 4:14-15 That
we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and
carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of
men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to
deceive; But speaking the truth in
love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head,
even Christ:
1 Timothy 6:3-5 If any
man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words,
even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine
which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing
nothing, but doting about
questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife,
railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of
corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that
gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
Proverbs 4:1-2 Hear, ye
children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know
understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not
my law.
Isaiah 28:9-10 Whom
shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to
understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and
drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept,
precept upon precept; line upon
line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
John 7:16 Jesus answered
them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent
me.
John 7:17 If any man
will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it
be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
Acts 2:41-42 Then they
that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same
day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and
fellowship, and in breaking of
bread, and in prayers.
Romans 6:17 But God be
thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have
obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was
delivered you.
1 Timothy 1:3 As I
besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into
Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no
other doctrine,
1 Timothy 4:13 Till I
come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to
doctrine.
1 Timothy 4:15-16
Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them;
that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto
thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in
doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that
hear thee.
1 Timothy 5:17 Let the
elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour,
especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
2 Timothy 3:16 All
scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable
for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction
in righteousness:
Titus 1:9-11 Holding
fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may
be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the
gainsayers. For there are many unruly and vain talkers and
deceivers, specially they of the
circumcision: Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert
whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for
filthy lucre's sake.
Titus 2:1 But speak thou
the things which become sound doctrine.
Titus 2:7-15
7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in
doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of
the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to
say of you.
9 Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and
to please them well in all things; not answering again;
10 Not purloining [stealing], but shewing all good fidelity;
that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all
things.
11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath
appeared to all men,
12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts,
we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this
present world;
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing
of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all
iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous
of good works.
15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all
authority. Let no man despise thee.
2 John 1:9 Whosoever
transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ,
hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he
hath both the Father and the Son.
1 Timothy 1:10 For
whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind,
for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if
there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
Romans 16:17 Now I
beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and
offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and
avoid them.
2 John 1:10 If there
come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him
not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
