Definition:
From Strong's:
H995 - bene
A primitive root; to separate mentally (or distinguish),
that is, (generally) understand: - attend, consider, be
cunning, diligently, direct, discern, eloquent, feel,
inform, instruct, have intelligence, know, look well to,
mark, perceive, be prudent, regard, (can) skill (-ful),
teach, think,
(cause, make to, get, give, have) understand (-ing), view,
(deal) wise (-ly, man).
H6175 - ‛ârûm - aw-room'
cunning (usually in a bad sense): - crafty, prudent, subtil.
H6191 - ‛âram - aw-ram'
A primitive root; properly to be (or make) bare; but used
only in the derived sense (through the idea perhaps of
smoothness) bo be cunning (usually in a bad sense): - X
very, beware, take crafty [counsel], be prudent, deal
subtilly.
H7919 - śâkal - saw-kal'
A primitive root; to be (causeatively make or act)
circumspect and hence intelligent: - consider, expert,
instruct, prosper, (deal) prudent (-ly), (give) skill (-ful),
have good success, teach, (have, make to) understand (-ing),
wisdom, (be, behave self, consider, make) wise (-ly),
guide wittingly.
G4908 - sunetos - soon-et'-os
mentally put (or putting) together, that is, sagacious: -
prudent.
The word "sgacious" is a form or redering of the word "wise"
and I explain this in my sermon on the wise and foolish
virgins:
This is Strong’s word 5429 and means “thoughtful”,
“sagacious” or “discreet” (implying a cautious character).
Sagacious:
a) of quick sense perceptions; keen-scented; skilled in
following a trail (as in the pathway God has set before us).
b) Hence, of quick intellectual perception; discerning and
judicious; knowing; far-sighted.
From a table dictionary:
1] The state, quality, or fact of being prudent.
2] Careful management; economy.
SYNONYMS prudence, discretion, foresight, forethought,
circumspection. These nouns refer to the exercise of good
judgment, common sense, and even caution, especially in the
conduct of practical matters. Discretion suggests wise
self-restraint, as in resisting a rash
impulse: "The better part of valor is discretion"
(Shakespeare). Foresight implies the ability to foresee and
make provision for what may happen: She had the foresight to
make backups of her computer files. Forethought suggests
advance consideration of future eventualities:
The empty refrigerator indicated a lack of forethought.
Circumspection implies discretion, as out of concern for
moral or social repercussions.
Another dictionary lists:
1. the quality or fact of being prudent.
2. caution with regard to practical matters; discretion.
3. regard for one's own interests.
4. provident care in the management of resources; economy;
frugality.
Quotes:
“Wisely, and slow. They stumble that run fast.”
“I consider it a mark of great prudence in a man to abstain
from threats or any contemptuous expressions, for neither of
these weaken the enemy, but threats make him more cautious,
and the other excites his hatred, and a desire to revenge
himself”
“Good nature without prudence, is foolishness”
“If a wise man behaves prudently, how can he be overcome by
his enemies? Even a single man, by right action, can
overcome a host of foes.”
“It is better to be careful a hundred times than to be
killed once”
"Prudence is the knowledge of things to be sought, and those
to be shunned."
Scriptures:

trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat. Let us choose to us
judgment: let us know among ourselves what is good.
Psalm 112:5 A good man
sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with
discretion.

witty inventions.
Proverbs 12:16 A fool's
wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.
Proverbs 12:23 A prudent
man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth
foolishness.
From the commentary:
Proverbs 12:23 A prudent man
concealeth knowledge - Of things natural or
divine, which he is furnished with; not but that he is
willing to communicate it, as he should, at proper times, in
proper places, and to proper persons; but he does not
needlessly and unseasonably speak of it; he does not make a
show of it, or boast and brag of it: he modestly forbears to
speak of what he knows, but when there is a necessity for
it, even of that which may be lawfully divulged; which is a
point of prudence and modesty; otherwise it is criminal to
reveal secrets, or publish what should be kept private or
should not be known. ~John
Gill

Proverbs 22:3 A prudent
man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the
simple pass on, and are punished.
From the commentary:
Proverbs 22:3 A prudent man
foreseeth the evil - God in mercy has denied man
the knowledge of futurity; but in its place he has given him
hope and prudence. By hope he is continually expecting and
anticipating good; by prudence he derives and employs means
to secure it. His experience shows him that there are many
natural evils in a current state, the course of which he can
neither stem nor divert: prudence shows him beforehand the
means he may use to step out of their way, and hide himself.
The simple - the inexperienced, headstrong, giddy, and
foolish - rush on in the career of hope, without prudence to
regulate, chastise, and guide it; thus they commit many
faults, make many miscarriages, and suffer often in
consequence; and the commission of crimes leads to
punishment.
Proverbs 27:12 A prudent
man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple
pass on, and are punished.

himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against
the honourable.

Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent
in their own sight!
Isaiah 29:13-14
13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw
near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me,
but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear
toward me is taught by the precept of men:
14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work
among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for
the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the
understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
Amos 5: 12-15
12 For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty
sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they
turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.
13 Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time;
for it is an evil time.
14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the
LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have
spoken.
15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment

have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning
in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and
prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is
with him.
