Putting On Christ
go
directly to point 19
go directly
to point 20
In this series we are expanding on one simple directive from
God. It is found in Romans 13 and verse 14
“Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ”
In the first 9 lessons, we discussed the first 18 elements
of Christ’s character.
Today we will discuss Points 19 and 20 of Christ’s
character; elements that we must have if we are to be like
Him.
I want to look at two more attributes of Jesus Christ today
that we should know about as we approach the Passover/Lord's
Supper and the Days of Unleavened bread.
2 Corinthians 13:5-6
says…
5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your
own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus
Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates.
In Part 9 we looked at the two aspects of Christ that relate
directly to the Passover/Lord's Supper. Christ took action
and He was bold. We take action by coming to the
Passover/Lord's Supper service and we boldly take of the
bread and the wine.
Some time ago, in the split sermon, I spoke about just how
important the symbols of the bread and the wine are. Today
we will look at two aspects of Jesus Christ that have to do
with another part of the Passover/Lord's Supper service.
They both have to do with the relationships He had while in
human form on this planet. With His parents, His disciples
and the others He came to know well.
Point 19: He Served Them
Note: The following verses show that Christ came as a
servant and desires that we be servants like He was.
Matthew 20:26-28
26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be
great among you, let him be your minister;
27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your
servant:
28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto,
but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Matthew 23:11-12
11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he
that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
Mark 9:33-37
33 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked
them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the
way?
34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had
disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.
35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto
them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last
of all, and servant of all.
36 And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them:
and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,
37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name,
receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not
me, but him that sent me.
2 Corinthians 4:5
5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord;
and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.
Galatians 6:7-10
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man
soweth, that shall he also reap.
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap
corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the
Spirit reap life everlasting.
9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season
we shall reap, if we faint not.
10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all
men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
Philippians2:3-8
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in
lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than
themselves.
4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also
on the things of others.
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to
be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the
form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself,
and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Point 20: He
Set an Example for Them
Note: The following verses show that Christ came to be an
example and desires that we too be examples of the
principles (fruits of the Spirit) that Jesus is.
Colossians 3:12-15
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved,
bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness,
longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any
man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you,
so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the
bond of perfectness.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the
which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
1 Peter 2:21
21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also
suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should
follow his steps:
I John 2:4-6
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his
commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of
God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to
walk, even as he walked.
Notice: Without the law
we cannot know the principles of God. The law points mankind
toward these principles of Christ. This verse says if we do
not keep the law, the truth is not in us. This is stating
that without the law, there are no principles in us. Verse 5
says that if we keep His word we are perfected by “love”.
Love is the embodiment of all principles. Notice how the
verse says that we know that we are in him. Christ is
principle. If we are principle we are in Him and He is in
us. We are one. Then verse 6 states that if we are one, then
we should conduct ourselves like Christ. Christ invoked (or
demonstrated) these principles and so should we.
I John 3:14-16
14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because
we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth
in death.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know
that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down
his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the
brethren.
One final verse that comes right from the text we will read
at the Passover service. This one verse shows Christ being
both a servant and an example.
John 13:12-17
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his
garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye
what I have done to you?
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet;
ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I
have done to you.
16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not
greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than
he that sent him.
17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
And happy we will be when we come to the Passover/Lord's
Supper.
